Project: Clarington Board of Trade (CBOT) Website Redesign
Role: Web Design & Development Focus: UX/UI Design, Accessibility (AODA), Mobile Optimization, Information Architecture
Project Overview The Clarington Board of Trade required a modernized digital presence to better serve its community of businesses in Courtice, Bowmanville, Newcastle, and Orono. The redesign focused on transforming the website into a robust, accessible resource hub that facilitates networking, advocacy, and economic growth. The new site prioritizes user experience, ensuring that both current and potential members can effortlessly access vital information across all devices.
Key Deliverables & Features
- Mobile-First Responsive Design: Recognizing the shift toward on-the-go business management, the new interface is fully optimized for mobile devices. The layout adapts fluidly to smartphones and tablets, featuring touch-friendly navigation and streamlined content blocks that reduce scroll fatigue. This ensures that event registrations and member directory searches are as intuitive on a phone as they are on a desktop.
- Strategic Content Organization (IA): To handle the vast amount of information—from podcast episodes to corporate partner listings—the site structure was reorganized for clarity.
- Streamlined Navigation: A logical hierarchy now categorizes content into clear sections like “Events,” “Membership,” and “Resources,” reducing the number of clicks required to find specific services.
- Quick Links & CTAs: High-priority actions, such as “Join Now” and “Member Login,” are prominently placed, while a “Quick Links” footer section provides rapid access to frequently used tools like the Group Insurance Plan.
- Member-Centric Value Proposition: The redesign effectively communicates the value of membership to two distinct audiences:
- For Potential Members: Dedicated landing pages clearly articulate the benefits of joining, supported by testimonials and clear pathways to the “Become a Member” application.
- For Current Members: An enhanced “Member Directory” and exclusive access to the “Member2Member Discount Program” and “Business Resources” turn the website into a daily utility rather than just a static brochure.
- Accessibility & Inclusivity Standards: Built with AODA compliance in mind, the site ensures equal access for all users.
- Visual Accessibility: The design utilizes high-contrast typography and clear spacing to improve readability.
- Assistive Technology Support: Structural improvements, such as descriptive Alt text for images and proper heading tags, ensure compatibility with screen readers, reflected in the site’s dedicated Accessibility Statement.
The Outcome The result is a dynamic, professional platform that accurately reflects CBOT’s role as a leader in local economic development. The new website not only looks modern but functions as a powerful tool for member engagement and community connection.
